Clone Wars Competition

Your mission, should you choose to accept, is to brew a clone of a commercially available beer.

  • On your honor, it must be a beer that you have never before attempted until now.
  • Your entry quantity is a minimum of 660ml of each: home brewed clone and the commercial beer that you are imitating.
  • The scorecard will consist of Appearance, Aroma, Taste, Style difficulty, and Obscurity for a total of 25 Points.
  • Judging will take place on 17 February 2025.

Pimp My Kit Competition

Calling All Adventurers!

We are embarking on a new type of competition… Pimp My Kit! This competition is for club members only, but anyone is invited to participate as a judge. Muntons has generously sponsored our group with a stash of Muntons Gold Continental Pilsner Beer kits. The goal is to make the kit into something of your own. If you were not able to get a kit from the supplied stock, have no fear. They are fairly easy to purchase from most homebrew shops online (e.g. the Malt Miller and Home Brew Shop.co.uk).

The Rules:

  • The pimped kit must be a Muntons Gold Continental Pilsner,
  • All kit supplied ingredients must be used (in some form),
  • The equivalent of two 500ml bottles or more must be provided for judging on 18th March 2024.

The Goal:

To take an ordinary beer kit and make an extraordinary beer!

You may enhance, adjunct, or supplement the kit however you wish, as long as it is safe for consumption. No need to follow the kit instructions (you probably wouldn’t have anyway).

Warning! One kit will be made as per instructions and that beer will be tasted alongside each of the entries to discern if an improvement was achieved.

Please reach out if you have any questions. All questions will be posted here so everyone is aware of the Q&As.

Q: Can we change out the yeast? A: No, the provided yeast must be used in some way.

Q: Can we microwave the supplied yeast and use it as nutrient for an additional yeast? A: Yes, this is acceptable under the rules.

October 2023 Meeting

I am sad to say that there were no pumpkin beers this month. I will definitely try for next year!

Attendees: Dena, James, Alex, Jon, Ed, Jamie and Mark (Oyster Boys Brewing), and Theo.

  • Jamie started the night with a Carling clone ~3.9%. As my first taste of Carling, I have to say I was not terribly impressed . I was assured that it was very much like the real thing.
  • Mark brought a Vienna Lager ~5% that was from a Munton’s kit, the Tap Room range. This had a lovely malty note.
  • Jon shared a Black IPA ~6.6%. This was an all grain brew using Citra and Simcoe in the whirlpool and Mt Hood for the dry hops. It was delightfully hoppy and dry.
  • Mark then poured a Raspberry sour ~5% called Munton’s Sour Glass, which is also a kit from their Tap Room range. This had an excellent raspberry flavour and aroma.
  • Ed treated us to an Elderflower version of his wild beer ~6ish% (with yeast cultivated from a single raspberry). As always, Ed’s wild beers are good enough to make a Belgian brewer cry.
  • Alex shared a ginger cider ~6%, he had used fresh, stem, and powdered ginger in the making as well as his own apples. This was tart and gingery with a dry finish, delicious!
  • Theo was practicing for the Pimp My Kit challenge (coming this spring). He used a Mangrove Jack’s kit for a Belgian Tripel and instead of dextrose added a combination of demerara and brown sugars. He also swapped the provided hops for citra and mosaic. This came out very well and was about 7.2%
  • Jamie also brought a Hefeweizen (didn’t get the ABV, sorry) that was produced from an all-grain Malt Miller wheat kit. It had some clove spice and a good mouthfeel. I love wheat beers !
  • Last, Dena shared a sweet mead ~15%. It was unexpectedly carbonated, but that certainly helped make it more refreshing and offset the sweetness of honey.

All around, a fantastic evening!

May 2023 Meeting

Last night we had a chance to say farewell to Joe and Jean. We are excited to hear how their new adventures turn out as they promised to keep in touch. It was also great to hear how people were getting on with their competition brew for next month.

I am sad to say, I forgot to specifically ask for the favorite of the night. However, if I remember the responses correctly, it was Steve T.’s Extra ESB at 6.3%. An amazing, malt forward bitter with notes of caramel.

May’s beer:

  • Steve L.: Kolsch (4.9%), IPA brewed with Rakau (5%), and an English Bitter (4.7%)
  • Joe and Jean: Lawnmower Pale Ale (5.2%)
  • Steve T.: Maris Pilsner (6.5%) and Extra ESB (6.3%)
  • Bernie: an IPA “that went wrong” (~2%)
  • Penny: smoked lager (5.4%)
  • Dena: winter warmer (spiced weizenbock, 6.9%)
  • Mark: Even Sharks need Water (6.6%)

April 2023 Meeting

Growing our group

This month we had a great turnout and many goodies to try. With eleven participants, it is getting a little more difficult to spread a single bottle around. However, there were so many different styles and even a cider, it made for a fabulous evening.

April’s beverages:

  • Jamie and Mark (Oyster Boys Brewing): Neck Oil clone (4.1%), Hefeweizen (>5.5%), and Rum Soaked Raisins: a Belgian dubbel (7%)
  • Alex: Cider (11%), Saison (5.4%), and a three year old Christmas stout (4.2%)
  • Steve T: English Bitter (4%), Amber Ale (6.8), and a California Common (8.2%)
  • Mark M: Landlord clone (4.6%) and Cold IPA (6%)
  • Charlie: Grape wine Gose (5%) and a 5 year old Belgian quad (12%)
  • Ed: Wild Ale aged on grape skins (6%) and a 6 year old Impy stout (15%)

We are gearing up for the June recipe roulette competition. I believe all members that are interested in participating have drawn a flavour. Drawings are as follows:

  • Nicki – grapefruit
  • Ed – caramel
  • Dena – vanilla
  • Steve L – ginger
  • Bernie – honey
  • Charlie – mushroom
  • Ben – rhubarb
  • Alex – rose petals
  • Munro – herbal
  • Theo – orange peel
  • Mark (OBB) – floral
  • Jamie (OBB) – raspberry
  • Mark M – lemon
  • Steve T – pineapple

We are still in need of judges and prizes for the competitions. If you have the connections for us, please give us a shout on Facebook.

July 2022 Meeting

Small steps in gearing back up

With many people on holiday and the major heat wave effecting public transport, only four of us were able to make it in to enjoy some of the blissful air con upstairs of That Beer Place.

New member, Steve, joined us for the first time bringing our favorite beer of the evening, a Mosaic and Cascade IPA.

July beer and other beverages:

  • Munro: Lager (5.5%), Fruit Saison, apricot (7%)
  • Ben: Belgain dubbel (7-8%)
  • Steve: Mosaic and Cascade IPA (5-6%), NEIPA (?), Oatmeal Stout (?)
  • Dena: Cherry melomel (17%)

We are looking forward to next month for the Anti-Imperial Stout competition. Charlie has issued the challenge to use a recipe provided by https://drinkersforukraine.com/ to get us all back into the swing of brewing. We hope to see you there on August 15th!

February 2019 Meeting

Oof!!! What an evening…

The decision to write this blog post so early the morning after may turn out to be a mistake!

February’s meet was a busy one; 9 people, 19 beers, 1 great evening and 1 even greater hangover!

February’s Beers

  • Nicki: Double Grapefruit IPA (5.8%), Not a Christmas Beer (?.?%)
  • Ivor: Barley Wine (9%), Citra Pale (4.5%), Raspberry Pale (4.5%
  • Chris: Amber Willy (4.9%), Best Bitter (4.2%), Blackberry Stout (5%), Chilli Stout (5%)
  • Charlie: Ginger & Sorachi Ace IPA (?.?%), Three Bean Stout (12%)
  • Guy: Saison (4.6%), Chilli Porter (5.3%), Braggott (12%)
  • Graham: Porter (5.7%)
  • Ed: Bourbon Aged Stout (15%), Coffee Stout (15%), Coconut Stout (15%)

The quality of beers on offer this month was truly exceptional! Nicki’s Double Grapefruit IPA, Chris’s Chilli Stout, Charlie’s Three Bean Stout, Guy’s Braggot, and Ed’s selection of Stout’s are all worthy of mention and each of them could have won Brew of the Month on any other occasion!
The victor though, with 4 votes, was Charlie’s Three Bean Stout. Cacao, Tonka Bean and Coffee, all blended into a barrel aged, 12% Stout. Absolutely fantastic. Well done Charlie!

Keep your eyes peeled for the recipe coming soon!

January 2019 Meeting (Part 2)

Goddam it’s cold outside…

Even the arctic weather couldn’t deter six hardy souls from coming to our second January Meeting though it has to be said there was a pretty limited representation of our homebrewing talents with only 3 beers on offer! That being said, the quality of the brews was fantastic as always and a good night was had by all!

January’s Beers

  • Guy: Unknown Pale Ale ?.?%
  • Ed: NEIPA (Galaxy & Citra) 6.2%, Imperial Stout 12%

Due to the limited offering this month we didn’t vote for a Brew of the Month!

After taking a break last year, 2019 sees the return of our Recipe Roulette competition! For this year we have been donated some hops by the generous folks at Top Rope Brewing added to which is a randomly picked ingredient from a very varied selection! The draw is as follows:

  • Ben: Topaz & Fresh Herbs
  • Chris: Topaz & Cardamom Pods
  • Ed: Boadicea & Coriander
  • Guy: Topaz & Fruit
  • Matt: Apollo & Ginger
  • John: Fusion & Star Anise
  • Nicki: Bravo & Vanilla
  • Charlie: Boadicea & Tea
  • Mark: Apollo & Coffee
  • Simon: Fusion & Cinnamon
  • Nick W: Bravo & Chilli
  • Graham: Experimental 07270 & Heather Flowers

There are some spare picks so if I have missed anyone from the list please give me a shout and I will add you on!

Happy brewing and Good Luck!!!

Brew of the month – January 2019 (Part 1)

Brew of the month!!!

The first meet of 2019 showcased a wide variety of beers but the standout favourite amongst all the drinkers was Charlie’s Raspbery Ripple Pale Ale! Congratulations Charlie!

raspberry ripple

Charlie’s recipe for the Raspberry Ripple is:

  • 2kg Pale malt
  • 0.02kg Crystal malt
  • 0.02kg Wheat malt
  • 30g Green Homegrown Hops @ 60 mins
  • 20g Chinook Hops @ 10 mins
  • 1 pkt Safale Ale Yeast
  • 600g Raspberries (frozen then thawed)
  • 15ml Vanilla Extract
  • 2 tbsp Custard Powder

Charlie brewed this to just 2 litres volume using a standard 60 minute infusion mash and reports as OG of 1.052 and a final ABV of around 5%. The fruit was freshly picked from his garden, frozen and thawed to break down the cell walls in the fruit, and then added to the fermenter along with the vanilla and custard powder after 1 week of fermentation had passed.

While it’s tricky to see in this photo the Raspberries have given the beer an amazing red colour and the additions of vanilla and custard powder have taken away a lot of the tartness you would expect leaving a very drinkable summer pale!
Perfect for early January then!

January 2019 Meet (Part 1)

Off to a freezing cold start in 2019 with our belated Christmas Meet, kindly hosted this week by Beer Heroes Chester! From those that braved the cold we had quite a varied selection of beers being showcased this month.

January’s Beers (Part 1)

Charlie: Birch Sap Pale, Mulberry Pale, Raspberry Ripple Pale
Ben: Jaipur Clone, Simcoe & Chilli DIPA, Epic Pale Ale
Ivor: Northdown IPA v1, Northdown IPA v2, Strawberry Northdown IPA, Barley Wine

Ivor brought a selection of beers made on his new brew kit. Three variations of a Northdown, Challenger & Fuggles IPA and also a new Barley Wine.

I delved deep into the bottle stores and brought along a selection of old beers brewed in 2017/2018. Some had lasted better than others and it was clear that glass bottles were far better for long term storage than plastic. The two beers stored plastic bottles had not aged successfully to say the least!

Charlie brought along three variations of his green hopped Pale Ale. The first flavoured with Birch sap, the second with Mulberries and the third he named as a Raspberry Ripple Pale. Loaded with nearly 1.5kg of fruit per litre and sweetened with custard powder this was a real crowd pleaser and rightly the winner for the first ‘Brew of the Month’ award of 2019!
